There are plenty of concepts that are important to your spiritual development. Non-duality is one of them. But what is it exactly and how does it impact you?

Duality vs. Non-Duality

How many times have you heard, “Nothing is black and white?” Probably more times than you can think of. While we know this to be mostly true, the world doesn’t always work this way.

We live in a world of opposites. Up and down, true and false, and the list goes on and on. Even the world of religion and spirituality isn’t beyond this, when we talk of good and evil. But the danger in duality is that we can become polarized and judgmental in our thinking.

Non-duality is significant because you’ll know and experience that we truly are all one.

Non-duality on the other hand, could be considered unity. The term non-duality is a fairly loose translation of “Advaita” a Sanskrit word that means whole or “not two.” Whereas duality seeks to separate, non-duality seeks to join. Completion and oneness are its signs.

It is What it Is

Non-duality’s true desire is unity consciousness—being connected with everything and everyone in the present moment. There are no judgments, only awareness, which ultimately leads to the infinite love of the Divine. It’s a tough concept to grasp and even tougher to experience, but it’s part of our spiritual journey.

The funny thing about non-duality is that it simply “is what it is.” You can’t exactly go and seek it, develop it, or even learn it from a book or teacher. For those of us who love achieving goals and receiving feedback, it can be quite frustrating indeed!

Why It’s Important

So why is non-duality important to your spiritual development, especially when it’s so intangible? Because it is both a simple and complex challenge that causes you to go within. You really have to get in touch with your soul.

Non-duality is significant because you’ll know and experience that we truly are all one. That means uniting with everything and everyone—even that which you despise. You’ll start to see that even the most horrible people in the world are still a reflection of you (and everyone else) and are still part of the Divine.

Most of all non-duality will help you remember your true spiritual magnificence. As Carl Sagan said, “The cosmos is within us. We are made of star-stuff. We are the way for the universe to know itself.” You are the Universe!
