Your Sacred PLACE

We all deserve to have a little corner of our own for contemplation. Setting up a small space for meditation or prayer is a wonderful thing to do for yourself. Dedicating a special area in your home or yard for spiritual work doesn’t have to be time consuming or costly. Here are some ideas for creating your own sacred space.

When and Why To Use a Sacred Space

A sacred space can actually be used anytime. It all depends on your needs. You may like to use it early in the morning before anyone else in the house arises. You might prefer to use it before going to sleep. You might also use it anytime you have a free moment. You can use it as little or as often as you choose. It’s entirely up to you!

Why use a sacred space? Although you can meditate or pray practically anywhere, having your own set space makes it extra special. Another benefit to having a dedicated space is that it helps you focus and set your intention. By designating this space for spiritual work it will help you attract those energies necessary to assist you. It sets you and your purpose apart from the everyday hustle and bustle of your life so you can center yourself.

Choosing Your Space

Choosing your space is easy. It doesn’t have to take up a lot of room. As long as you have room to sit comfortably, that’s all you really need. However if you have extra room and want to use a larger space that’s fine too. You are not limited to the inside of your home either. If there’s available space in the yard or garden you can use that as well. Nor are you limited to one sacred space; you can have as many as your dwelling will allow!

To find that special spot, use your intuition as well as your practical side. If there are several spots to choose from, you might be drawn to one that has sunlight in the early morning. Perhaps you feel a certain comforting energy in a certain corner of a room. Maybe there’s a majestic tree in your yard that you like to be near. No matter what it is, go with a space that feels right to you. It will help you retain and bring in positive and uplifting energy.

Another factor in choosing your space is noise level. Be sure to select an area that is free of distractions where you won’t be disturbed. That can be tough for a busy mom or dad, but make sure you’re family understands that this is an off limits “me-time” space. It’s important to have an area for yourself and that others respect your privacy and boundaries. By taking time for yourself, you can be a better person for others!

What To Include

Once you have chosen the area for your sacred space, now comes the fun part. You get to personalize it! What should you include? Again that’s entirely up to you, but there are some basics you may want to consider. A mediation cushion or chair is a great start. If you feel more comfortable sitting on the floor, go for it! Including a special mat or decorative rug is a great personal touch.

Next bring in meaningful object to decorate your space. You may opt for a single item or something simple like a plant. If you use the garden, a bench by a favorite tree or a gazing ball would work. Some people prefer a more elaborate set up. In this case, consider using a small table in your sacred space. You can include things like incense, candles, crystals or statues on your table in an altar like fashion. Also consider hanging some inspirational art or photos in your area. You are only limited by your imagination!

Creating a sacred space can enhance your meditation and help you focus on thoughts and prayers. It is a wonderful gift to give to yourself. And remember that by giving to yourself you can help give to others. Bring the sacred into your home and life!
