If you’re not familiar with the I Ching, it is one of the world’s oldest oracles. Known as the Book of Change or Book of Changes, it was written in China about 3,000 years ago. Not only can using this book help you with divination, it can practically change your life!
It Fosters Introspection
Unlike many forms of divination that attempt to provide more definitive answers, the I Ching seems to bring up more questions! Although that sounds like an oracle you’d rather run from than consult, here me out for just a minute.
Unlike many forms of divination that attempt to provide more definitive answers, the I Ching seems to bring up more questions!
The I Ching fosters introspection. As the 12th century poet Yang Wanli once penned, “The profound implications of the Book of Changes are what plunges people of the world into doubts and makes them think.” The seemingly cryptic messages contained in its hexagrams challenge you to reach your innermost depths to arrive at your own revelations.
By using the I Ching, you develop a better relationship with your inner self and learn to listen to (and trust) intuition. That alone can change your life dramatically!
It Embraces Uncertainty
The book’s name itself implies uncertainty. It serves as a reminder that life is an endless series of changes. Existence is fluid, much like the flow of a river’s currents.
Each line of a hexagram has the potential to change its meaning, and thus change your reading. The I Ching can take you on a journey of possibilities, showing you the potential twists and turns that may come your way.
Even its descriptions have an element of uncertainty to them. Consider this quote from the book, “Perseverance alone does not assure success.” Does that mean you should give up? Does it mean that you need to add other elements to your hard work? There’s no clear-cut answer. But when you consider those questions, although the outcome is uncertain, what you ultimately do is in accordance with your free will. That’s pretty powerful.
The I Ching embraces uncertainty and asks you to do the same. If you can, you will find yourself liberated from fear—and ready to be the master of your own fate!
